WHITE PAINTED FLOORS FOR A FRESH START TO THE YEAR

White Painted Floor

USING THE POWER OF PAINT FOR IMMEDIATE DRAMA

Painting over faux wood floors

It’s been over a year ago I painted these floors white and added a medallion pattern over them…here’s the scoop on how you can get the look too.

a clean slate

I have been in love with white painted floors and the Scandinavian design style for a long time, with its fresh use of white and minimal colors in interiors the effects are so serene and calming. Perhaps it’s because I work with color all day and really need to rest my eyes from color in my surroundings, either way I am a neutral loving girl. When we purchased this “fixer-upper” we decided to only do cosmetic updates until we knew what we ultimately wanted to do with this farmstead home on our property. It’s been over a year ago that I painted the floors white, it was an easy decision! Foolishly I started by using a hand held paint roller, I still laugh about that amatuer move! ha! I quickly purchased a long handle and rollered my way along in record speed.

inspiration is key to design

Let’s first take a look at what my inspiration was: I scoured Pinterest, like any design-obsessed person does, and came across many white painted floors and this Swedish style image caught my attention. I have gone down EVERY rabbit hole to find the source and haven’t been able to locate it, so if you know it, please leave me a comment!

Beautiful Medallion + White Painted Floor Inspiration

This is was the starting point for my White Painted Floors. An inspirational photo of a beautiful Swedish interior with an over-sized medallion painted floor. Tonal color effects with the big scale pattern produces Big drama, and it was all achievable with paint!

good bye ugly floor

open concept for floors to be painted
large open entry room

The floors were in pretty great condition, I only had to patch a few holes and deep scratches, especially around the fireplace marble hearth.

paint it white!

white painted floor progress
the white paint was an immediate improvement

I didn’t use any primer, because the coverage was so good. I tested it out in a corner and decided that it was working fine. I also added a semi gloss sealer to the top to preserve the finish.

specialty floor paint

porch and floor paint

This is the paint I used and it took 2 coats to cover the floors. It went on beautifully! I think I will try the Benjamin Moore floor paint next to get a more matte finish, however, I do like the polished finish for the grand appeal of this old house.

Valspar Porch and Floor Latex, easy on and easy clean up! I will link the product here: https://www.valsparpaint.com/en/find-the-right-product/exterior/paint/latex-porch-floor-paint.html

white painted floor, oops
OOOPS!

No white painted floor could be complete without a mishap or two, right?

drafting the template

Hand made floor template

Drafting the pattern on the computer-looking at new layouts

I drafted the pattern on the computer and played with variations and went back to the original layout. but this was a fun version to use for selecting paint chips at the paint store.

green tape to the rescue

taped the pattern layout

I must admit I tried the other paint tape ( blue) and it was a disaster! I quickly found out that using Frog Tape which I will link here : https://www.frogtape.com/products/multi-surface-painters-tape-green-94-in-x-60-yd was the way to go. I must have purchased over a dozen rolls!! No bleeding under the edges and it didn’t lift off any of the paint. The painted medallion pattern took over 3 months to complete. I was grateful that my sister and her husband came and helped me when I was laying out the largest part of the living room. Thank goodness for their help, they were lifesavers and are always creating new improvements in their own home, so they are kinda pros in my book!

The finished floor

This was a fun project and I have also painted 2 other rooms floors in this house since this one. I am excited to share those with you soon.

Happy Creating!
