An Al Fresco Farm Wedding infused with Family Creativity

photo: Woodman Weddings

Hello! It’s almost June, and that means summer wedding season is in full bloom…(sorry for the pun, lol) so I thought I’d share my niece’s beautiful wedding day with you. Taylor and her husband SoJo (short for Saul Joseph… love that nickname BTW) got married last spring over  Memorial Day weekend. They chose the most quaint barn venue in eastern Washington. I was honored to be asked to help Taylor and my sister Wendy and her maid-of-honor with the floral designs, some decor items and the bouquets for the big wedding day! Here’s a look into how Taylor infused family creativity into an Al Fresco Farm Wedding!

Here’s a little behind the scenes on the creative wedding Taylor designed. I asked her a few Q & A’s about what her wedding day inspiration:

LG: if you could sum up your wedding design theme in 3 words, what would they be?

Taylor: Sentimental, Intimate, Family-oriented

Here’s a photo of the day before the wedding, my sister, the bride and her maid-of-honor, along with the venue owner…prepping the barn.  Taylor and I collected lace table runners from store finds and she tea-dyed them to give them all a cohesive tone. They were beautiful layered on top of the white drape cloths.

LG: how did you choose your venue?

Taylor: I was looking for a simple, naturally beautiful, backyard kind of feel that didn’t need a lot of decorating. The moment I looked around this venue in person, I just knew it was perfect and I could easily envision my wedding there. I recommend visiting venues in person because pictures do not always do it justice.

LG: did you have a specific color palette and theme? What concepts were you using for inspiration?

Taylor: When I started my wedding planning, I didn’t have a specific color palette. I knew I wanted soft colors and I didn’t want anything to be too loud or too matchy. After I found my wedding dress, which had a champagne undertone, I started to incorporate that color more in different shades with the decor and bridesmaid dresses. I chose a navy suit for the groomsmen because I did not want a harsh black color with the soft outdoor theme that was evolving. I found that keeping the colors natural and soft and mixing textures made the look very elegant.

LG: I enjoyed working with you on your special day and I loved the flower choices you made, do you have any secret sources that seemed to work best for you that you might recommend to someone working within a budget? I pre-ordered all the eucalyptus at a local farm and grocery market and I also purchased the peonies at our town’s farmer’s market to add to your flower purchases.

Taylor: It was wonderful that my venue offered many decor items to choose from, they had a great pantry and workshop space. I ordered flowers from Costco and our local Trader Joe’s. To save on money, I collected a few silk flowers from craft stores to use as “hidden” fillers, which came in handy. I would also recommend that you start very early pulling together decor items to allow time to be more creative and to make frequent trips to the stores.

I made simple tags for the bouquets by typing each name and making a little template to trace onto store bought hang tags. Adding simple champagne colored ribbon elevates the look and co-ordinates with the bridal palette.

Taylor created these wedding hoops to add height and a little symbolic nod to endless love. I spray painted my thrift store urns and added some lilies, roses, eucalyptus, and peonies. A perfect backdrop for the bride and groom’s table.

Taylor wanted a chalkboard wedding schedule, so I created this one for her. I like the messy chalk “history” halo effect of being used multiple times. It gives a casual elegance that she was wanting.

I made a “just married” wedding wreath for the newlyweds….I took a few photos on my Jeep! Which way do you like it, on the front or the back??? lol.

LG: I loved the aspect of including your family and each person seemed to have a special role in your wedding…could you list them out and share a few sentiments around them?

Taylor: Family has always been important to me and I have never wanted a formal wedding with people I don’t know personally doing the announcing and photography, etc…so it was very natural for me to ask my family if they would help with the wedding day. Everyone worked so well together and it made the day so special and intimate.
